SMALL GROUPS
God did not design us to lead solitary lives. We believe that God desires all of us to have a place to belong and be intimately cared for. Sharing life together allows us to care for one another and to grow in our relationships with each other and with God.
Building relationships takes time and commitment. Since Sunday worship and coffee hour provide only brief opportunities to greet friends and meet new people, Stanwich believes that the best way to build deeper connections is by joining a small group.
What is a Small Group?
A small group is basically the church meeting together in a smaller form. The size
of the group is intentionally smaller to help build relationships among the members. They meet regularly, usually in someone's home. Members of a small group care for each other, pray for each other, and help each other in times of need. Most groups keep an “open chair” to welcome others who may want to join them. Some groups have been meeting for years, while others are new each year. We invite you to join a group that’s right for you.
Types of Small Groups
- Fellowship groups emphasize the importance of building Christian relationships through caring for one another, and connect through a group activity or similar interest that enhances these relationships.
- Gathering groups offer an ongoing open invitation to everyone to gather in a large group before breaking out into small groups. Gathering groups are designed for people who want to participate in small groups but may not be able to commit to a weekly schedule.
- Study groups investigate the Bible to examine the Christian faith, meet other Christians and grow in their understanding of the Christian life.
- Support and Recovery groups address special needs such as addictions, loss of loved ones, or life improvement such as marriage enrichment.
- Life groups are designed for those who want to commit more time to developing relationships and sharing their spiritual life together.
Why Small Groups?
- Jesus had one. “Whoever claims to live in him, must walk as Jesus did.” (1 John 2:6)
- Small groups provide a context for building authentic Christian community. Fellowship
is a basic characteristic of the Christian life throughout the Bible.
- Small groups meet “real needs”. According to a Gallup poll report people share
several key needs:
- to believe life is meaningful and has a purpose
- to have a sense of community and deeper relationships
- to be appreciated and respected
- to be listened to and heard
- to feel that one is growing in faith
- to have practical help in developing mature faith
Small groups can play a key role in meeting these needs.
